Brazil’s Barbosa, Raimundo, Gontijo e Câmara Advogados has hired the legal manager of Rio-based football club Flamengo as counsel.
André Galdeano, 43, officially joined the firm on 8 July. He balances his new private practice role alongside his position at Flamengo, where he has been legal manager since 2010. He will remain based at Flamengo and will be available for Barbosa Raimundo “whenever necessary” to offer consulting services.
Managing partner Pedro Raimundo says Galdeano’s strong knowledge and insight into sports law and entertainment rights will contribute to the growth of the firm in these areas. “We are delighted that André has joined our team,” he says, adding that demand for his services has grown in Brazil over the last few years, particularly in Rio. Events like the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games “have proven the city’s DNA for sports and entertainment, not only for pleasure but for business too,” adds Raimundo.
Galdeano will advise major football clubs, coaches, managers and other athletes outside of football. To avoid conflicts of interest, he will be prevented from working on any case that directly or indirectly involves Flamengo. “I will be preparing contracts and legal opinions in line with the constant changes of legislation and the sport’s increasing dynamism,” he says.
The management of many amateur Brazilian football clubs is tipped to professionalise in the coming decade, which will generate greater demand for practitioners specialised in sports law.
Flamengo is one of the most popular football teams in Brazil. It is one of only five national clubs never to have been relegated from the country’s primary football competition, the Brasileirão. The team has won six Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, three Copa do Brasil, and 35 Campeonato Carioca titles.
Barbosa Raimundo is a full-service firm with a strong corporate practice. It also offers clients regulatory advice related to public health, as well as tax litigation services. It recently advised Brazil’s 3R Petroleum when it purchased 34 oil fields in the Potiguar Basin from Petrobras in March as part of the latter’s continued divestment plan.
